How can you not be tempted by this attractive green and shiny apple? But did you know that it is actually named after a Granny Smith?

It was named after Maria Ann Smith who left the UK’s shores to live in Australia in the 1830s. She is said to have discovered the new variety of apple by chance while cultivating fruit in her family orchard in New South Wales and it is thought to be a hybrid of two varieties. Maria and her husband had numerous children and she became a popular resident, earning the affectionate nickname Granny Smith.

It is suggested that this apple is a variety that is a particularly efficient source of antioxidants when eaten complete with skin. As with many apples they are low in calories and high in fibre and potassium. So if you like a crisp, slightly sour apple eat as many of them as you like!

This mouth-wateringly popular apple is available to enjoy all year round. Savour its taste by crunching into it,  slice it onto a healthy salad or enjoy with a traditional English ploughman’s lunch. Although it is not a traditional cooking apple, it does make a tasty tarte tatin served with whipped cream. Naughty but nice!
